Balance Breeds Success

Balance Breeds Success – Take that to the bank! It’s hard to find a successful person, company or even sports team that becomes number one in its field without balance. Don’t believe me? Well, let’s examine…

I love football and living in the Southeast, I see a lot of SEC teams play. The SEC is typically considered the best conference in NCAA Division I football. At the end of each year, several SEC teams have the opportunity to compete in bowl games against teams from other conferences and more often than not win their games. An SEC team, LSU, just won the national championship earlier this month. What makes the SEC so good? Balance. Most of the SEC teams have a balance of good leadership in quality coaches, outstanding talent on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, balanced running and passing games, and die-hard fans who support their programs. What other team in the nation wouldn’t want that? It’s a nearly unbeatable combination…

In business, the companies at the top of their fields operate by this equasion:

GM+GP+GS&M+GCC=Success

That breaks down to Great Management+Great Product+ Great Sales and Marketing+Great Customer Care=A standout company. You can have success for a time without this balanced formula but over the long haul, you’re likely to fall behind your competition and lose market share. Take away great customer care and you’re likely to loose existing customers (ever switched cell phone companies because of this?) or the best marketing in the world won’t sustain your success over the long term if your product is sub-par.  What about having a great product but no one hears about it because your sales and marketing team aren’t targeting the right potential customer? Pretty simple if you think about it…

For you, try this formula for balance:

HB+HM+GD=success.

A Healthy Body + a Healthy Mind + Good Decisions = a healthy and happy life. If you take care of your body by eating right and exercising, stay positive, optimistic and inquisitive about your world and make great decisions, it’s hard not to be successful in life. Again, sounds simple, doesn’t it?

If it’s so simple, why aren’t more teams, companies and people successful? It’s because balance isn’t a priority. Many don’t know the importance of a balanced approach or they try taking shortcuts to success. Shortcuts generally don’t work and if they do, it usually is for the short term. To lose weight and keep it off requires eating well and exercising regularly, not for just a few weeks a year. Growing and sustaining a successful business takes hard work, ingenuity and consistency. For an SEC team to win a national championship, it takes talent, practice, determination and lots of preparation. Success in anything takes some work but, most importantly, it can be done. Once you get the ball rolling and you become accustomed to the process that leads to success, it becomes easier. The point is to get started!

If you would like to put these formulas to work for you, the Life Barometer Program can help you with specific steps to get your ball rolling. Click here to read more about the Life Barometer. The Power of Balance

Balance is an amazing state. In nature, it leads to peace. In business, it leads to profit. For us, to be in balance is to have peace-of-mind. If it is such a good state in which to be, why don’t we focus on achieving it more? It certainly seems that it is a lost art…

Just look around. We don’t live in a society that puts an emphasis on balance. Instead, we’re living in a 24-hour connected, hyper-stimulated, over-indulged world. Studies show that poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyles and tobacco use are responsible for 80 percent of chronic diseases. That means the vast majority of those diseases could be reduced or eliminated by living life in a healthier way. If you balance exercise with good nutrition and smart lifestyle decisions, you dramatically increase your health. This principle works in business too. If you have a great product but a lack-luster sales team or customer service, you’ll only be successful for a while. But, if you balance a great product with a great sales team, great customer service care and careful money management, watch out! Success is much easier to achieve. For farmers, the proper balance of water, temperature, sun and nutrients will lead to a successful crop. Balance is powerful.

Most of us don’t recognize that power. Therefore, we end up focusing too much of our attention on one thing while the others go ignored. Jobs trump relationships and family. Short-term pleasure trumps long-term ramifications. Big houses trump a healthy checkbook. Surgery trumps wrinkles. Doing these things are so commonplace in our society today they all seem so normal. We’re not shocked when they happen. How common are these things? Do you know someone who’s family life is a wreck? Do you know someone who’s close to losing their house because they bought more house than they could afford? How many people do you know are suffering health problems because of a bad diet and a lack of exercise? Chances are you know LOTS of people in these positions. Don’t become one of them. If you already are, take steps to change.

When you’re planning your goals for 2008 (which I encourage you to do), work on prioritizing balance. A good dose of healthy relationships, healthy finances and a healthy body amaze you in the difference it can make in your overall well-being. If you find yourself asking, “How can I do all of that?” My answer, “How can you not?” If you need ideas on how to create a life of balance, the Life Barometer Program can help. No matter how you do it, work on balancing your life so that it promotes peace instead of the “normal” stress. I know from experience that you can take your life from average to amazing using the power of balance…
