Balance Breeds Success – Take that to the bank! It’s hard to find a successful person, company or even sports team that becomes number one in its field without balance. Don’t believe me? Well, let’s examine…
I love football and living in the Southeast, I see a lot of SEC teams play. The SEC is typically considered the best conference in NCAA Division I football. At the end of each year, several SEC teams have the opportunity to compete in bowl games against teams from other conferences and more often than not win their games. An SEC team, LSU, just won the national championship earlier this month. What makes the SEC so good? Balance. Most of the SEC teams have a balance of good leadership in quality coaches, outstanding talent on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, balanced running and passing games, and die-hard fans who support their programs. What other team in the nation wouldn’t want that? It’s a nearly unbeatable combination…
In business, the companies at the top of their fields operate by this equasion:
GM+GP+GS&M+GCC=Success
That breaks down to Great Management+Great Product+ Great Sales and Marketing+Great Customer Care=A standout company. You can have success for a time without this balanced formula but over the long haul, you’re likely to fall behind your competition and lose market share. Take away great customer care and you’re likely to loose existing customers (ever switched cell phone companies because of this?) or the best marketing in the world won’t sustain your success over the long term if your product is sub-par. What about having a great product but no one hears about it because your sales and marketing team aren’t targeting the right potential customer? Pretty simple if you think about it…
For you, try this formula for balance:
HB+HM+GD=success.
A Healthy Body + a Healthy Mind + Good Decisions = a healthy and happy life. If you take care of your body by eating right and exercising, stay positive, optimistic and inquisitive about your world and make great decisions, it’s hard not to be successful in life. Again, sounds simple, doesn’t it?
If it’s so simple, why aren’t more teams, companies and people successful? It’s because balance isn’t a priority. Many don’t know the importance of a balanced approach or they try taking shortcuts to success. Shortcuts generally don’t work and if they do, it usually is for the short term. To lose weight and keep it off requires eating well and exercising regularly, not for just a few weeks a year. Growing and sustaining a successful business takes hard work, ingenuity and consistency. For an SEC team to win a national championship, it takes talent, practice, determination and lots of preparation. Success in anything takes some work but, most importantly, it can be done. Once you get the ball rolling and you become accustomed to the process that leads to success, it becomes easier. The point is to get started!
